Shanghai Food Crawl: Xiaolongbao to Hot Pot in One Day
Shanghai food guide for one day: shengjian bao, xiaolongbao, Haidilao, lamb skewers. Best restaurants and must-try food—reservations, route, and budget.
Shanghai is one of the best food cities in China, and a Shanghai food guide for a single day can take you from street breakfast to late-night hot pot without feeling like a stunt. I’ve done this crawl in different orders and with different groups; the version below is the one I keep coming back to. You’ll hit xiaolongbao, shengjian bao, Shanghainese home cooking, Haidilao or lamb skewers, and bubble tea and bakeries in between. Budget about ¥400–700 per person.
The single thing that will make or break your day is reservations: Haidilao and the popular lamb skewer spots can mean two- or three-hour waits without a booking. I learned that the hard way. Last updated March 2026.
Set up WeChat Pay before you go—you’ll need it for ordering, reservations, and paying at most places. Many restaurants have English or picture menus; for allergies, writing “我对XXX过敏” (I’m allergic to XXX) and showing it to staff works well in my experience.
Morning: Breakfast and Yu Garden Area
Start with shengjian bao (pan-fried soup dumplings). Da Hu Chun has been doing them since 1932; let them cool slightly, bite a small hole, drink the soup first, then eat the dumpling. Then head to the Yu Garden area for xiaolongbao—Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant is the famous name (arrive before 9 AM for shorter lines). The bazaar around Yu Garden has cong you bing, stinky tofu, osmanthus cake. Grab a Heytea after; Shanghai has more outlets than anywhere else and it fits the morning.
Afternoon: Shanghainese Lunch and Snacks
Move to the French Concession (Line 10) for a proper Shanghainese lunch: hongshao rou (red-braised pork), scallion oil noodles, mapo doufu. Expect ¥60–100 per person at a solid local place. Then Linlongfang for more xiaolongbao with an open kitchen, or a bakery like Lillian for egg tarts. B&C butter bread and specialty coffee are good afternoon stops. You’re not far from Wukang Road; a short walk there fits if you want to mix food with the city walk.
Evening: Hot Pot or Lamb Skewers (Best Restaurants in Shanghai)
Haidilao is the hot pot experience most visitors want: free manicures while you wait, noodle shows, and 24-hour branches. Book one to two days ahead via the WeChat mini-program or expect 40 minutes to three hours wait. Figure ¥150–250 per person.
The lamb skewer place (Inner Mongolian lamb on conveyor grills) is another viral hit; also book via WeChat, especially on weekends. Must-orders: lamb skewers, condensed milk toast, and the free milk ice cream at the end. About ¥80–150 per person. I’ve done both in one trip—Haidilao one night, lamb skewers another—and that’s the combo I recommend if you have two evenings.
Shanghai Food Crawl: Budget and Booking
Breakfast and snacks: ¥50–100. Lunch: ¥80–120. Afternoon drinks and bites: ¥50–100. Dinner: ¥150–300. Transport: ¥20–30. Total roughly ¥400–700.
For Haidilao and lamb skewers, WeChat booking is essential; for fine dining, reserve further ahead. Our payment and WeChat Pay guide walks through setup so you can reserve and pay smoothly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are there English menus? Many larger places have English or photo menus. I use WeChat translate for the rest and rarely have trouble.
What about vegetarians? Shanghai has good vegetarian and Buddhist-style restaurants, especially near Jing’an Temple. It’s worth searching for “vegetarian” or “素食” in your area.
How do I communicate food allergies? Write “我对XXX过敏” (Wǒ duì XXX guòmǐn) with your allergen and show it to the server. I’ve found staff take it seriously when it’s written down.
What Shanghai food must I try in one day? Shengjian bao, xiaolongbao, Shanghainese hongshao rou and scallion oil noodles, then either Haidilao hot pot or lamb skewers with condensed milk toast. This crawl hits the must-try list.
A one-day Shanghai food crawl works best when you book Haidilao or lamb skewers in advance and start early for xiaolongbao. Set up WeChat Pay before you go. For more on each dish, see our xiaolongbao, Haidilao, and lamb skewers guides.
