3 Days in Shanghai: Sights, Food & Where to Sleep Guide
3-day Shanghai itinerary: Bund, Yu Garden, French Concession, Haidilao, lamb skewers. Things to do in Shanghai over three days—plan and budget.
Three days is the length I recommend for a first real trip to Shanghai. This 3-day Shanghai itinerary covers the classic sights, the French Concession, serious food, and a bit of shopping without running yourself ragged. I’ve used this structure a few times and adjusted it after each visit: Day 1 is the “postcard” loop (Bund, Yu Garden, Nanjing Road, Lujiazui), Day 2 is the Concession and hot pot, Day 3 is lamb skewers and RT-Mart before you leave.
Budget about ¥1,500–2,500 on the ground for two nights, meals, attractions, and transport; staying near Nanjing Road or Xintiandi keeps travel time down. Last updated March 2026.
The main lesson from my first three-day trip: I did Haidilao at 7 PM and waited over two hours. The next time I booked after 10 PM and walked in with almost no wait. For lamb skewers, a 5 PM reservation meant we sat down immediately. So timing matters more than the restaurant choice. I’ve kept those timings in the plan below.
Day 1: Classic Shanghai
Morning at The Bund—Metro Line 2 to Nanjing East Road, then walk. Morning light is best for Pudong photos. Then Yu Garden (¥40), lunch at or near Nanxiang for xiaolongbao, and the bazaar. Afternoon on Nanjing Road: shopping, Heytea or Starbucks, snacks.
Late afternoon: Shanghai Tower observatory (¥180)—arrive about an hour before sunset and book online. Dinner at IFC (Din Tai Fung, Waiba, or food court), then back to the Bund for the lit-up skyline. Book Shanghai Tower in advance to avoid long queues.
Day 2: French Concession and Haidilao
Start at Shanghai Library (Line 10, Exit 3) for the Wukang Road and city walk: Wukang Mansion, Anfu Road cafes and boutiques, then Tianzifang and Xintiandi. Brunch or lunch on Anfu Road; dinner or drinks in Xintiandi. Book Haidilao for after 10 PM—waits drop sharply. Hot pot runs about ¥150–250 per person. If you prefer to keep the evening earlier, reserve Haidilao for 6–7 PM and expect to wait unless you book well ahead.
Day 3: Food and Shopping Before You Go
Lunch at the lamb skewer restaurant (WeChat reservation, around 5 PM slot if you can—we walked right in). Must-orders: lamb skewers, condensed milk toast, beer. About ¥130 per person.
Afternoon at RT-Mart on Pingxingguan Road (Line 1, Yanchang Road): Three Squirrels nuts, Guolifang fruit liquor, Lao Gan Ma, China-only snacks. Then Binjiang Avenue for a last view of the Bund from the Pudong side (free).
Leave for the airport with enough time: Hongqiao 30–40 minutes by metro, Pudong about 70 minutes on Line 2 or 40 with the Maglev. Our 48-hour itinerary is a tighter version if you have less time; the one-day essential route covers the single-day highlights.
3-Day Shanghai Itinerary: Budget and Where to Stay
Mid-range total: hotel ¥600–1,000 (2 nights), food ¥500–700, attractions ¥250, transport ¥100, shopping ¥200–400. You can trim with a 3-star near Nanjing Road, food courts, and Jin Mao (¥120) instead of Shanghai Tower, or a metro day pass. Nanjing Road is central but noisy; Xintiandi is quieter and great for dining but pricier; Jing’an is good value. Rain backup: Shanghai Museum, IFC or other malls, observatory or bars instead of long outdoor walks.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I do lamb skewers vs Haidilao? I do Haidilao after 10 PM on Day 2 (shorter wait) and lamb skewers with a 5 PM reservation on Day 3 so we’re not rushing to the airport.
What if I buy too much? Some places can ship to your hotel, or save most shopping for the last day so you’re not carrying it for three days.
Is this okay with kids? Day 2 has a lot of walking. If you’re with children, consider swapping Day 2 for Shanghai Disneyland or the family museum and park day.
How long to the airport? Hongqiao: 30–40 min by metro. Pudong: about 70 min by Line 2 or 40 min with the Maglev.
Is a 3-day Shanghai itinerary enough for first-time visitors? Yes. You’ll hit the Bund, Yu Garden, Nanjing Road, Lujiazui, French Concession, and key food spots. Add a day for Disney or a water town if you have time.
Three days gives you the classic loop, the Concession, and serious food without rushing. Book Haidilao and lamb skewers in advance; start Day 1 at the Bund in the morning for the best light. For shorter trips, see our 48-hour itinerary and 1-day essential.
