Shanghai at Night: Bund, Lujiazui & River Cruise Guide
Things to do in Shanghai at night: Bund, Lujiazui observatory, Huangpu cruise. Best spots and timing for Shanghai night views and photos. When to go.
Shanghai’s night view stands with Hong Kong and New York: colonial buildings on one bank, supertall towers on the other, and the Huangpu in between. I’ve shot it from the Bund, from Shanghai Tower, and from the river, and each angle is different. For things to do in Shanghai at night, the Bund is free and unbeatable for the classic shot; the observatory gives you the full panorama; the cruise puts you in the middle of it. This guide is the routes and timing I use, plus what I’d do differently after a few tries. Last updated March 2026.
Lights typically turn on between 6:00 and 7:00 PM depending on season and go off around 10–11 PM. I aim to be in place 30 minutes before lights-on so I catch golden hour, blue hour, and the first lit-up skyline. The one time I showed up at 8 PM in winter I found the lights had already been on for two hours and the best transition was over—still beautiful, but not the same. Budget ¥100–300 for a simple evening (Bund only) or more if you add the observatory and dinner with a view.
Route 1: The Bund (2–3 hours) — Best Shanghai Night View (Free)
Arrive at Nanjing East Road Station (Lines 2/10) by 5:30 PM, walk to the Bund, and hold a spot before sunset. North end near Huangpu Park is good for tripods; Waibaidu Bridge gives you bridge and skyline; the waterfront platform gets you close to the water. After full lighting, walk Nanjing Road for neon and crowds. The Bund itself is free and safe; I’ve been there alone at night many times.
Shanghai Night View Route 2: Shanghai Tower Then River (3–4 hours)
Arrive at Lujiazui (Line 2) by 4 PM, enter Shanghai Tower observatory (¥180, book online), and stay through sunset and lights coming on. Then Binjiang Avenue for the Bund view from the Pudong side, and optionally the ¥2 ferry to the Bund to finish on the classic side. Dinner at IFC or on the Bund. Full details on the Pudong skyline tour.
Route 3: Huangpu River Cruise (1–2 hours)
Standard cruises run 45–60 minutes and cost about ¥80–150; dinner cruises are more. Board around 7–8 PM for the best view. Upper deck outside is best for photos; bring a light jacket. The boat moves, so handheld or high-ISO works better than a tripod. Cruises face one direction at a time—choose your side (Bund or Lujiazui) and sit on the opposite side so you look at your preferred view.
Route 4: Full Evening (5–6 hours)
Combine Lujiazui observatory (sunset), Binjiang walk, ferry to the Bund, Bund walk, then Nanjing Road and dinner. Transport between Bund and Lujiazui: ferry ¥2 (recommended), sightseeing tunnel ¥55, or metro ¥3 with no view. For a packed weekend that includes this, the 48-hour Shanghai itinerary fits a night view into a two-day plan.
Weather and Safety
Clear nights are best. After rain I’ve had the clearest air. Rain can cancel cruises; smog can make the observatory disappointing (Bund is still okay). The Bund and Lujiazui are well lit and heavily used; I’ve always felt safe there at night.
Frequently Asked Questions
Best season for night views? Autumn (September–November): clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Summer is humid; winter is cold but often clear.
Cruise or observatory? Cruise: you see both sides from the water. Observatory: full 360° from above. They’re different; do both if you have time.
Is the Bund free? Yes. Walking the promenade is free and gives you a world-class view.
Safe alone at night? In my experience, yes. The area is well lit and busy with tourists and locals.
What are the best things to do in Shanghai at night? Walk the Bund (free), Shanghai Tower observatory at sunset (¥180), and a Huangpu River cruise (¥80–150). This guide covers timing and routes for all three.
Shanghai’s night view is best when you time it for the transition from day to lit-up skyline. Pick one route for a short evening or combine observatory, ferry, and Bund for a full night. For more ideas, see our Pudong skyline tour and Bund guide.
